Playing for CPVC

What will a player gain from being a member of CPVC?

A player will receive a cost conscious competitive youth volleyball experience. CPVC focuses on the personal and athletic development of the student-athlete while creating a positive and effective learning environment giving the student-athlete the opportunity to pursue individual excellence within a team dynamic. Most import is lessons of character, discipline, responsibility, accountability, commitment, leadership, work ethic, teamwork, courage, integrity, communication, cooperation, sacrifice and good sportsmanship. Players gain sound, fundamental and specific volleyball skills with an emphasis on proper nutrition, fitness and conditioning, and healthy lifestyle choices.

At what age level will I play?

Carolina Regional Volleyball Association uses the USA Volleyball age definitions for determining a player’s “competition age”. Please click the link above to determine your appropriate age classification.

Are there different level teams within and age group?

Yes. The Carolina Regional Volleyball Association has a number of skill levels at each age group (e.g., Platinum, Gold, Silver, Bronze, Copper, and Nickel). The team’s coach will enter the first tournament at a level they decide is appropriate for the team to compete. Following that, the Carolina Regional Volleyball Association may move the level of the team to a different level based on their play. The Carolina Regional Volleyball Association determines team placement with a Points System.

Can I play at a different age level?

Yes. Players may be placed on a team at a higher age level. This may occur for players who have an advanced skill level. Players may not play at a lower age level as defined by the USA Volleyball age definitions.

How long is the season?

The season typically runs from mid November to the end of March when the final Carolina Regional Volleyball Association tournament concludes.

Is there an option to extend the season?

The season may extend beyond March if players, parents, and coaches agree. There are a number of out of region tournaments that are available to players as far as June.

What if I play softball?

We recognize that many volleyball players excel and participate in other sports. As such, there is often a conflict of playing and practice times. We require players to notify their coach of such occurrences well in advance. Your coach will discuss with you what commitment is required and the cost of missing practices and tournaments.

Teams

How many teams are there in CPVC?

In the 2008-09 season six teams competed under the CPVC banner. There were two 18s, a 17s, two 16s, and a 14 year-old team. A total of 56 junior players comprised those six teams.

How many teams will there be this season?

The number or teams will fluctuate with the number of players trying out. In the 2008-09 season 56 players formed 6 teams.

What is the team selection process?

The team selection follows the tryouts. All coaches participate following the evaluation of players. The older aged teams are typically formed first as younger players can typically be moved up to fill spots. Teams and then filled up by playing age moving to the younger ages. Every effort is made to place players on teams with others who have the same skill level.

Is everyone guaranteed to make a team?

Our philosophy is to find a place for all girls to play. Unfortunately it may be the case that there are not enough players for a particular age group and/or there are too many players and not enough coaches. In either case it may be possible for a player to be part of a “practice squad” at a coach’s discretion. While not on a travelling team, a player may want to develop skills while attending all team practices over the season.

How many players on each team?

Typically teams are composed of 9-10 players.

How do I know I made a team?

Your coach or club representative will contact you after the tryouts.

What do I need to do after I make a team?

Once a player has been assigned to a team a letter of commitment must be signed and an initial down payment made. CPVC will hold a general meeting following tryouts for this. Then show up to practice, play, and have fun!

Do teams have the option of being Regional, National, & Power level teams?

Yes. All teams will compete at the regional level and participate in the If higher skilled teams wish to compete in the Carolina Regional Volleyball Association tournament schedule. Teams with an advanced skill level may choose to compete at the National and Power level. That decision is up to the players, parents, and coach of a particular team.

How much playing time is guaranteed?

The amount of playing time may vary depending on the skill of a player, number of players on a team, and the level of competition at a particular tournament. Players’ court time may be restricted due to violations of team policy (e.g., unexcused missed practices).

Do some teams play bigger tournaments outside the regional tournaments (National Level)?

Yes. Teams may choose to compete in open “out of region” tournaments. That decision is up to the players, parents, and coach of a particular team.

How competitive is CPVC compared to other clubs?

During the 2009-10 Carolina Regional Volleyball Association season 2 CPVC teams competed at the Platinum level; 2 CPVC teams competed at the Gold level; 1 CPVC team competed at the Bronze level; and 1 CPVC team competed at the Copper level. Three of those teams finished in the top 3 of their divisions.

Tournaments & Travel

Where, when and how many regional tournaments are played?

There are 6 regional tournaments. They begin in the first or second week on January and occur every second week until March (i.e., 2 tournaments per month). They are played throughout the state. Specific dates and sites are posted on the Carolina Regional Volleyball Association website

What are the typical costs associated with regional tournament travel?

In 2010, costs for tournaments include entry fees, dinner, and any travel coast incurred by the players. All players split the entry fee. The regular season entry fee is $130 with the championship tournament entry fee is $150. Most tournaments do not require an over night stay. Travel costs for transportation depend on the distant travelled. Coaches are reimbursed for their travel costs. Typically families provide lunch on a rotating basis to all players and parents. Aside from transportation, it would typically cost a player less than $40.

What are the typical costs associated with out of region travel?

In 2010, costs for out of region tournaments include entry fees, meals, and any travel costs incurred by the players, as well. Entry fees tend to be higher (e.g., $250). These tournaments require a one or two over night stay. Travel costs for transportation depend on the distance travelled. Coaches are reimbursed for their travel costs. Aside from transportation and hotels, it would typically cost a player less than $100.

Does everyone on the team play at the tournaments?

Yes. Every effort will be made to have all players see some court time at all tournaments. The total amount of playing time may vary depending on the skill of a player, number of players on a team, and the level of competition at a particular tournament. Players’ court time may be restricted due to violations of team policy (e.g., unexcused missed practices).

Are parents expected to travel to tournaments?

In most cases, parent(s) travel to tournaments. Recognizing busy work schedules and other commitments it may not be possible for parent(s) to go to a specific tournament. Typically the coach then arranges for a player whose parent(s) cannot attend to travel with another parent.

Are some tournaments required?

Technically no tournament is required. We would like to see all teams play in all regional tournaments. The final decision is, however, up to the players, parents, and coach of a particular team. All teams must play in THREE Carolina Region Regular season sanctioned events to be eligible for the Regional Championship tournaments.

Coaches & Practice

Who are the coaches?

They’re a great group of individuals who volunteer their time for the love of volleyball and are dedicated to developing young volleyball players in a positive learning environment. They include coaches from middle school, high school and collegiate programs and former university and collegiate players. Check them out at on our coaches page.

When and where are practices?

Practices are typically held a minimum of twice a week. Additional practices are usually added during holiday breaks and at the discretion of the coach. Practices are held in local public school gyms and private sites.

When does practice start for the season?

Officially practices will begin following the final tryout. This is typically by the middle of November.

Are players’ expected/encouraged to practice and workout on their own?

While this is not a requirement for making a CPVC team, we strongly encourage all athletes to practice and do conditioning outside of the team’s required practices. Superior athletes are always those ones that go above and beyond the pack!

Will be a charge for trying out for CPVC?

There is no charge for trying out for CPVC.

How much does it cost to join CPVC?

Travel and accommodation costs varied from team to team depending on the amount of tournaments entered and distance travelled.
